Today in Parliament, Sarah Newton MP celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Act of Parliament that enabled all men and some women to vote. Only women over thirty and owning property were enfranchised in this ground breaking legislation. It wasn’t until 1928 that all men and women had equal rights to vote.
Today, we launch a range of Government activities to encourage more women to get involved with our precious democracy. In addition to information for schools and colleges, there is also a grants programme to enable community based projects and activities to celebrate this important milestone on our democracy.
Sarah Newton MP commented, “I was very proud today, representing all my constituents, past and present, who have fought long and hard for the freedoms we too easily take for granted today.
I encourage our excellent local arts and cultural groups to consider ways in which they can engage our community in celebrating universal suffrage. Grants up to £125,000 are available to enable community based reflection, education and celebration of women getting the vote.
We have come a long way over the past 100 years but there is still much more to do in ensuring women’s voices are heard in council chambers and in the House of Commons. This year is a great opportunity to inspire the next generation about standing for elected office. I am always delighted to talk about my role and answer questions as well as providing work experience to all my young constituents, especially girls.”
