Science is a transformative force for good in our world, driving medical innovation, helping us to look after our world and creating not just new jobs, but whole new industries.
Truro and Falmouth has a proud scientific past and continues to make an important contribution to knowledge and innovation. From Exeter University’s Environment and Sustainability Institute and Marine Renwables team (both based at Tremough) and its European Centre for Environment and Human Health (based in Truro) to the Peninsula Medical & Dental School at Trelsike, vital research and practical work is being done from Cornwall. The findings of the staff and students at these institutions, and their colleagues elsewhere in the UK, make a real difference to local businesses in a range of sectors, from marine renewables to digital media.
In 2012, in order to better serve of this vibrant scientific community in Cornwall, I joined House of Commons Science and Technology Committee. On the Committee our job is to scrutinise the Government’s use of science and technology, and to look at ways in which policy affects science and technology sectors. The Committee conducts regular inquiries and produces regular reports into important scientific issues. You can find out more about the Science and Techology Committee's work on their website which is frequently updated with new developments.
A recent inquiry that may be of particular interest was entitled "Bridging the Valley of Death", examining how the Government can improve the commercialisation of technological innovation in the UK. The report has advised the Government that it needs to develop a clear strategy which ensures that Britain's world-class science and research can be developed commercially. This will ensure that our technological advances can help to support the British economy.
I am pleased that the Government’s responsible handling of the economy has meant that it has been possible invest in science, and ensure that the sector if financially supported to play a catalytic role in Britain’s economic future. More information on this support can be found here.
The Government published our Plan for Growth: Science and Innovation in December 2014. This can be found here.
